# Sync

Sync keeps a project the same on all your computers. You change it on one, and a few moments later the change is on the others. Sync is the only part of Flesance that needs an account and a plan.

## What stays free {#free}

Making music needs no account, no plan and no connection. Recording, writing notes, arranging, mixing, exporting, every instrument and device, the history of every change, your projects on your own computer: all of it works the same with sync off, and sync is off until you turn it on.

If you disconnect, never subscribe, or your plan ends, the projects on your computers stay exactly as they are.

## Connect this computer {#connect-this-computer}

Open **Settings**, choose **Account** and press **Connect this computer**. You can also run **Connect to your account** from the [command palette](/manual/getting-started#commands).

1. Your browser opens your account page. If you are not signed in, it sends a six-digit code to your email address. There is no password.
2. The page asks whether to connect this computer. Say yes.
3. The browser hands the answer back to Flesance, and the Account page shows **Connected** with your email address.

Flesance never sees your email code or a password. It keeps a key that lets this computer act for your account. The key lives in your computer's own place for passwords (the Keychain on a Mac, the Credential Manager on Windows, GNOME Keyring, KWallet or another Secret Service on Linux). It is not in your projects, in the settings file or in the journal.

A Linux computer with no such place cannot keep the key safely, so Flesance does not keep it at all. You stay connected until you quit, and connect again next time. The Account page tells you.

**Disconnect this computer** forgets the key here. Your projects are not touched, in the cloud or here. Your account page still lists the computer until you remove it there, which you can do at any time. A computer removed there is disconnected the next time it asks.

You can connect up to ten computers to one account.

## Keep a project in sync {#keep-in-sync}

Open the project menu and choose **Keep in sync**, or use the switch on the Account page in Settings. You choose for each project, and it is off for every project. A project leaves your computer only when you say so.

Once it is on:

- The project is sent to your account the first time, with its history, its recordings and the state of its plugins.
- A few seconds after you stop changing things, your changes are sent.
- While the project is open, Flesance asks your account every half minute whether another computer changed it. Most of the time the answer is no, and nothing is shown.
- **Sync now** in the project menu does both at once.

Only the main line of the song goes. [Ideas](/manual/history#bookmarks) stay on the computer they were made on. The instruments of the library are not sent, because every computer gets them from the library.

The status bar shows a sync that takes a moment, how far it has got, and what it did: how many changes came in and how many went out. A sync with nothing to do shows nothing.

Turning **Keep in sync** off stops sending and receiving for that project. Its copy in your account stays there until you delete it on your account page.

## On another computer {#another-computer}

Connect the computer, and the [start screen](/manual/getting-started#start-screen) lists the projects of your account that are not on it, under **In your account**, with their size. Press one to download it. When it is whole, it appears among your projects, opens, and is kept in sync from then on.

When another computer changes a project that is open here, the changes arrive between two of your own edits, never in the middle of a drag. If the same thing was changed on both computers while they were apart, nothing is lost. It is listed under [Changed in two places](/manual/getting-started#changed-in-two-places), as it is for any two computers.

## Working offline {#offline}

Keep working. The changes are sent when the connection is back, and there is nothing to do. Flesance mentions it only if you pressed **Sync now**.

## How much space, and for how long {#space}

A plan includes 30 GB in your account. Each project counts by what it holds, and the Account page shows how much you have used. A send that would pass 30 GB is refused as a whole, never cut. What is already in your account stays, the project on your computer is untouched, and the status bar says how full the space is. To free space, delete a project from your account on your account page, or turn **Keep in sync** off for a project you no longer need there.

When a plan ends, your projects in the cloud are read-only for 30 days and are then removed. During those 30 days a computer can still download them. Changes you make meanwhile are not sent. If you renew, sync carries on from where it stopped.

## When sync stops {#when-sync-stops}

When sync needs something from you, a line stays in the status bar until it is sorted out, and says what to do. Your project on this computer is never affected.

- **No plan, or the plan has ended.** Choose or renew a plan on your account page. Sync tries again by itself, or when you press **Sync now**.
- **The cloud space is full.** Free some, as above.
- **This computer was removed from your account.** Connect it again in Settings.
- **This version of Flesance is too old.** Update Flesance. Sync is paused until you do.
- **The project is no longer in your account.** You deleted it there. It is no longer kept in sync, and your copy here is untouched.
- **Restored from a backup, or copied and changed separately.** Flesance found two different histories under one computer's name, and sent nothing so as not to mix them. Turn off **Keep in sync**, or open the project on the computer that made it.
- **What the cloud sent did not check out.** Every recording and every change is checked before it is used. Nothing from that sync was used, and the project is as it was.
