# Keyboard shortcuts

These are the default keys, shown for your computer. Every key that runs a command can be [changed](#change); the arrows in the note editor and the keys held while dragging stay as they are. Keys are matched by their position, so they stay in the same place in every keyboard layout.

<PlatformSelect />

Every command is also in the command palette (<KeyCaps combo="primary+K" />), which shows its shortcut next to it, and hovering over a control shows its shortcut too. Both always show your own keys, not the defaults.

## Transport {#transport}

| Action | Keys |
|---|---|
| [Play / stop](/manual/transport#play) | <KeyCaps combo="Space" /> |

| [Quantize notes](/manual/note-editor#quantize) | <KeyCaps combo="Q" /> |
| [Transpose selected notes](/manual/note-editor#add-note) | <KeyCaps combo="↑" /> <KeyCaps combo="↓" />, with <KeyCaps combo="shift" /> by an octave |

## Project {#project}

| Action | Keys |
|---|---|
| [Save the project as a file](/manual/getting-started#projects) | <KeyCaps combo="primary+S" /> |
| [Open a project file](/manual/getting-started#projects) | <KeyCaps combo="primary+O" /> |
| [New project](/manual/getting-started#projects) | <KeyCaps combo="primary+alt+N" /> |
| [Export the mix](/manual/mixer#export) | none: from the palette or the menu |

In the desktop app <KeyCaps combo="primary+S" /> saves the project to its folder, <KeyCaps combo="primary+O" /> lists the projects on this computer, and there is one more key:

| Action | Keys |
|---|---|
| [Close the project and return to the start screen](/manual/getting-started#start-screen) | <KeyCaps combo="primary+W" /> |

## Tracks {#tracks}

| Action | Keys |
|---|---|

| [Add an audio track](/manual/tracks#add-track) | <KeyCaps combo="alt+shift+T" /> |

| [Duplicate the selected track](/manual/tracks#duplicate) (desktop app) | <KeyCaps combo="primary+shift+D" /> |

Not <KeyCaps combo="primary+T" />: the browser keeps it for a new tab, and the studio would never see it.

## View {#view}

| Show or hide the browser | <KeyCaps combo="primary+B" /> |

| [Keyboard shortcuts](#change) | none: from the palette or the menu |
| Settings | <KeyCaps combo="primary+," /> |
| [Musical typing on or off](/manual/note-editor#musical-typing) | <KeyCaps combo="K" /> |

## While dragging {#dragging}

| Hold | Effect |
|---|---|
| <KeyCaps combo="primary" /> | Ignore the grid |
| <KeyCaps combo="alt" /> (when starting the drag) | Move a copy, leave the original |
| <KeyCaps combo="shift" /> on a knob or fader | Fine steps |
| <KeyCaps combo="Esc" /> | Cancel the drag, as if it never happened |

The status bar shows what each of these keys would do while you drag.

## Knobs, faders and number fields {#controls}

| Action | Effect |
|---|---|
| Double-click | Type an exact value, <KeyCaps combo="Enter" /> to confirm |
| <KeyCaps combo="primary" />-click | Reset to the default |
| <KeyCaps combo="↑" /> <KeyCaps combo="↓" /> (or <KeyCaps combo="←" /> <KeyCaps combo="→" />) on a focused control | Small step; with <KeyCaps combo="shift" />, a fine step |
| <KeyCaps combo="Page Up" /> <KeyCaps combo="Page Down" /> | Big step |
| <KeyCaps combo="Home" /> <KeyCaps combo="End" /> | Minimum, maximum |

## Changing shortcuts {#change}

Open **Keyboard shortcuts…** from the project menu behind the Flesance mark at the left of the transport bar, or from the command palette. It lists every command with its keys.

- **Change**: click a command's keys, then press the new combination, for example <KeyCaps combo="primary+shift+S" />. <KeyCaps combo="Esc" /> stops without changing anything.
- **Taken keys**: if another command already uses the combination, the dialog says which one and asks. **Use it here** moves the keys to the new command and leaves the other without a shortcut; **Keep it there** changes nothing. One combination never runs two commands.
- **Remove**: the cross next to a shortcut leaves the command without one. It stays in the palette.
- **Reset**: the arrow next to a changed shortcut brings its default back. If another command has taken that default in the meantime, it keeps it, and the reset command stays without a key. **Reset all** returns every command to its default.

<KeyCaps combo="Esc" /> and <KeyCaps combo="Tab" /> cannot be shortcuts: <KeyCaps combo="Esc" /> cancels drags and closes menus, and <KeyCaps combo="Tab" /> moves between controls and is the sustain pedal in [musical typing](/manual/note-editor#musical-typing). While musical typing is on, letter keys play notes, so a command on a single letter works only while it is off.

Changes apply at once, everywhere: the keys themselves, tooltips, the palette and the hints at the bottom of the screen. They are saved in this browser, or on this computer in the desktop app, so another browser or computer starts with the defaults.
